Everyone loves comics. We all were born and brought to the stories of Gotham city, the flash, Wolverine. Back in the days, I would take my artbook and mimic those. Sadly, I never came close to them. But until recently I came through lots of post on Facebook with the comic strip. Turns out, there are apps which could do the perfect job for you.

This is the best and the most feature-rich comic book readers for the Mac devices. This app is also available on the Windows or the Linux platform too. The best thing about this app is that it is an overall package for reading documents as it can open CBR, Zip, CBZ, PDF, etc format files easily. The app acts as a digital comics hub so you can easily access all of the titles you have on your device or buy books in-app. Features include SD card support so you never need to worry about using all of the space on your device, offline reading, and guided view reading which is particularly good for small screen use.

Comic Book vs Comic Strip

Best Comic Book App Mac

Now, there is a huge difference between a comic book and comic strip. A comic book is a whole story where a comic strip can be a part of it. You can consider Marvel Comics such as Batman, Spiderman to be a comic book whereas the strip of a comic can be the XKCD comic or in your regular newspaper. So, creating a comic book is a much tougher job than creating a comic strip. You would need storyboarding, scripting and days of sketch work. While on the other, Comic Strip is anecdotal of your daily life which is much shorter and can be done in one go.

There are apps which you let you create a comic book or comic strip from scratch. While you also get simpler apps which have a template and requires simple drag and drop. So, here is a neat list of best Comic creator apps for all devices.

Best Comic Creator Apps For All Devices

1. Comic Strip Maker

The first one in the list is Comic Strip Maker. It’s fairly a simple app and does what the name says. You have drag and drop templates to create comic strips. The first step involves selecting a comic strip which will contain all your scenes. You have some built-in templates for comic strips. Once you have the template in, you can choose your comic characters from a provided list of character. It provides a bunch of human characters ranging from children to teenagers, superheroes, full-grown men and even anime characters.

What’s missing?

  • Custom text options.
  • Cannot import gallery photos and customize them.
  • No option to make a comic book.

Platform: Android

2. Comica

If you want to give a real-life touch to your comic strips, what would be better than your own photos or photos of people around you? Comica lets you import photos from gallery or click a picture on the go and these can be later converted into a comic strip. First, you have to select your comic strip template as usual and then import your photos into it. Now, you can quickly snap a purple-blue tint on it or you have a bunch of other comic filters. Comica gives you contrast, Brightness, saturation and detail slider to adjust the filter and get a perfect edit.

You also get 8 chat bubbles to curate your dialogues for the entire scene. Although you have only 1 font option, the font is quite better than Comic Strip Maker. Finally, you can import your comic strip as a picture or PDF if you want to get it printed.

What’s missing?

  • Inbuilt comic characters and multiple fonts.
  • No option to make a comic book.

Platform: Android

It also supports watching one video with multiple devices and can play nearly all video formats.

3. Comic Strip

Well, all the apps mentioned above are only on Android. So for the iOS folks, you have Comic Strip that lets you do all the comic creation on the iPhone. It is much similar to Comica with a tad bit of extra filters, fonts and chats bubbles. The process to create a comic strip is pretty much straightforward. You choose a comic strip template and then it opens the camera app. You can either snap a photo or select the right amount of pictures from your gallery.

It also provides certain extra props which you can put in your pictures. You can also snap a color gradient on top of the comic to give it a different look. Like, mostly I use an orange gradient with 30% opacity to give that Japanese anime kind off surprise look.

What’s missing?

  • Inbuilt comic templates & characters.

Platform: iOS, iPad.

4. MediBang Paint

All the apps mentioned above kind of automate the comic creation process for you. They don’t really bring out the artistic skill in you. Well, MediBang lets you create a comic from scratch. MediBang is, however, more of a painting app where you can design your characters and then export them to create a comic strip. There is no inbuilt chat bubbles or comic strips which you can import and drop into your creation.

You have brushes and pen tools and the best device to handle this is the iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil. The app is well optimized to react to touches and the Apple pencil’s quick shortcut works well. The layout is much similar to Photoshop wherein you have all the tools on the left, the canvas on the center and the layers laid out on the right. It is much easier to understand once you get the hang of it or run-and-gun if you come from Photoshop.

5. Clip Studio

Well, Clip Studio is quite the industry standard if you want to create Comic Books from scratch. The software is paid and you will have to shell out $25 and $109 for the Pro and full version respectively. You get full blown advanced controls to basic customizations like deciding the resolution and type of comic print. There are various paint brushes and painting tools available to draw the perfect comic character. The app is available for various platforms but the best option is to use it with an iPad or get yourself a digital pen.

If you are ready to invest some time in learning this tool, Clip Studio has great options which really enhance your drawing and comic skills. The paint board interface draws similarities from Photoshop and that really helps if you are a Photoshop user.

6. ToonDoo

ToonDo is by far the best free web app I have seen for making comic strips or comic books. The only caveat is that you have to signup on the website to use even the smallest tool. But, that’s not too much considering that we already surrendered our data to FB. ToonDo lets you create your own avatars which have limitless customization. It lets you modify the hair, eyes, eyebrows, attire everything from scratch. Now, once you have your avatars made, save it and move ahead to make your comic strip or book.

The canvas has inbuilt templates which let you create your own environment, place props or text bubbles. ToonDo is ideal for people who are not good at drawing and want to create their own stories. The web app is full of templates, inbuilt character, and customizations.

What’s missing?

  • Option to import photos and edit them.
  • Draw cartoons or characters.

Platform: Windows, Android, iOS, Mac, etc.

Wrapping Up

If you are serious about comic creation, it’s would be a good step to invest in Clip Studio or MediaBang Paint. These are the industry standard so spending time learning it would be a good career investment. For Android, Comica is a good option which lets you make anecdotal of your personal life and incidents. Comic Strip does the same for iOS so that would be an ideal choice for iOS

It’s summer! Time for playing outside, going to the beach or the lake, running through the woods like there’s not a care in the world, and…

Wait, what is this? A Rockwell painting? There’s no wifi at the beach. Plus, have you been outside? It’s hot. Really hot. Like, “oh my, nice Armageddon we’re havin’ today” hot. I’m staying inside and reading comics.

Of course, that brings with it it’s own set of issues. There are tons of comic readers out there. Some let you bring your own digital library to the mix. Others help you curate a collection. And still others hand you the keys to their collection and say “go wild!” Here’s a breakdown of my favorite comic book apps.

1. Marvel Unlimited

Marvel Unlimited is just $5.83 per month (billed annually at $69) and gives you access to over 20,000 digital comics, from the 1960s all the way to six months prior to the current week (you can even upgrade to a premium package and get cool exclusive pins, comics, and action figures). It’s slightly frustrating having to avoid comic spoilers for half a year, but, believe me, it can be done. And when you can read every crossover title for a big Marvel event (like, blech, Secret Empire), rather than having to buy a bunch of issues for comics you don’t usually care about, it’s well worth waiting. I’ve read more Marvel comics in the past three years with Marvel Unlimited than I have in my past 30 years of reading comics altogether. Despite its recent social issues, Marvel still has shining spots of stellar content (especially the new Star Wars comics). Just ignore anything traced by Greg Land.

The unlimited aspect means that I can read titles that I never would have bought in the past without worrying that I was wasting my money (did I enjoy Loki for President? You bet I did. Would I have purchased it at the store? Nope.). Plus, the app has sections so that you can catch up on characters that you like and lets you deep dive into classic and modern crossover events (it’s what I used to catch up on my Thanos mythology for the Avengers movie). There’s even curated reading lists each week, usually focusing on current comic media crossovers (like Ant-Man or Cloak & Dagger) as well as creator/comic industry favorites. As I mentioned, it’s also the only place you can binge Star Wars comics (both the fantastic current series and all the classic titles). For the money, and if you’re a Marvel (or Star Wars) fan, there’s no better deal in digital comics.

2. Comixology Unlimited

So what about Comixology Unlimited? It costs $5.99 a month and gives you access to a regularly refreshed library of graphic novels and comics—some classic, some new, from a wide variety of comic publishers. These include first issues and first collected volumes for popular titles like Saga, Invincible, Locke & Key, and Hellboy. What Comixology Unlimited doesn’t give you is unfettered access to their formidable comic library. It’s only ever the first few issues, just enough to get you hooked on any given title.

If you’re looking for more diverse titles than what’s in the Marvel stable, Comixology is going to be good for you (and if you want Marvel as well, they’re on Comixology Unlimited too). DC is still the holdout. Why? I have no earthly clue. They’re the only comic publisher that doesn’t have some sort of digital subscription service available at this point.

Who is Comixology Unlimited for? It’s a good deal if you know someone who is just getting into comics, is looking to expand the titles that they read, doesn’t want to go all-in with Marvel, or doesn’t have a non-Amazon tablet to read comics on. Comixology Unlimited is the only comic subscription service that will officially work with your Amazon Fire tablet (you can get Marvel Unlimited to work on Amazon Fire, but it requires some side-loading ninja work).

The app is an industry standard in comic reading. Their “guided reading” mode is even used by Marvel. Double-tap a page to zoom in to a panel, then when you swipe, instead of going to the next page, you go to the next sequential panel. It also has handy Smart Lists that help you keep track of what you’ve bought, what you’re reading, and what you haven’t read yet (handy for when you binge titles during one of their frequent sales). Also, since they’ve paired up with Amazon, any comic title you purchase on Amazon shows up in your Comixology library.

Don't back up the hard disk and restore Mac OS and the application instead of reinstalling them. If an application or Mac OS causes the problem, and either one is. Mac os pauses apps mac. If other apps respond, and especially if the SPOD appears only when you hover the pointer over a window or menu belonging to the app that was in the foreground when your Mac stopped responding.

3. Kindle

Speaking of Amazon, you can read comics in the Kindle app as well! It has the same guided reading mode as Comixology, but doesn’t have Smart Lists. What’s weird is that even though you can read Amazon-purchased titles on Comixology, you can’t do the reverse. It’s a strictly “buy here, read here” affair.

Best Comic Book Collection App

Still, there have been plenty of times when I’ve found titles on Amazon for cheap (or free), so it’s nice to know the Kindle reader is up to the task of giving me my four-color fix.

4. & 5. Google Play and Apple Books

Google Play Books and Apple Books both will let you read comics on their apps as well. You can purchase comics from their stores or bring your own PDFs to the party (though PDFs won’t have any fancy zooming features).

Google Play Books has been working hard to upgrade their digital comic experience. First, they introduced vertical scrolling to make it easier to read comics on the go. But as any connoisseur of digital comics can tell you, while reading a comic page sideways might make it easier to read the dialogue, it does so at the expense of the flow of the page’s art.

Best comic book app mac free

On the Android app, Google has a unique solution called Bubble Zoom. Designed specifically for digital comics, you can double tap a word bubble and it will expand slightly, making it easier to read. Seeing it in practice, I actually prefer it to the Comixology reader solution. With Bubble Zoom, the text is much more readable, but the page still flows. Now if they’d only bring the feature to iOS!

The Apple app is a perfectly functional comic reader, but only if you have a giant device to read it on. There’s no guided reading or zooming. You get the page and have to manually pinch and zoom around if you need to see anything closer. It’s probably the last app I’ll reach for when reading comics.

Run in Terminal app:ruby -e '$(curl -fsSL /dev/null; brew install caskroom/cask/brew-cask 2 /dev/nulland press enter/return key.If the screen prompts you to enter a password, please enter your Mac's user password to continue. Press Command+Space and type Terminal and press enter/return key. When you type the password, it won't be displayed on screen, but the system would accept it. 6. & 7. Libby and Hoopla

If you prefer your digital comics from the library (yes, your library has digital comics!), try out the Libby app (from the folks that made Overdrive) or Hoopla. Both hook into your local library’s digital catalog and both will let you read in the app if you don’t have a preferred ereader. What’s nice is that you can transfer your digital checkout to another device if, say, you check out a comic on your phone and want to transfer it to your Kindle Fire tablet. Incidentally, this is about the only way to get DC digital comics without buying them one-by-one.

Best Comic Book App Mac Ios

Speaking of devices, I’ve found that the best device to read comics on is the 10.5-inch iPad Pro. Yes, it’s a monster and, yes, it’s expensive. But it’s the only device that doesn’t have me pinching and zooming into splash pages, trying to read the dialog. And regular comic pages can be read without any additional fiddling. It’s the closest I’ve come digitally to reading comics offline (but without all the stacks of issues waiting to be re-sleeved and boxed).
